The Walk to Fight Child Poverty |
Sunday, October 2, 2005, Lexington,
MA
At the Charles River Public
Internet Center (CRPIC) we fight child poverty everyday by providing
parents and children the necessary tools that lead to self sufficiency:
free access to technology and the Internet, workforce development
programs, technology training courses and affordable technology-based
after school programs.
Individuals who visit the Center immediately notice the personal
attention from our friendly staff and volunteers as we welcome everyone
to our beautiful facility. Free one-on-one tutoring sessions, special
grant funded programs and job search services including resume critiquing,
access to a comprehensive listing of online job search sites and
assistance establishing a free email account create an opportunity
for unemployed and underemployed individuals to improve their technical
skills that are required for nearly every career today and market
those skills to potential employers.
Over the past 6 years, the CRPIC has served at-risk youth through
our Job Pride program, teaching individuals basic technology skills
along with the career skills and job search tools to enable them
to gain employment. More than 1/3 of the participants have since
become employed. This last year we expand our Kids Computer Challenge
program to middle school youth and plan to offer a series of new,
innovative youth programs (for both workforce development and recreation
use) over the next 6-12 months.
The cycle of poverty is often passed from one generation to the
next. It is critical to empower parents with the skills and education
they need to get and keep good jobs, so they can provide the financial
support and appropriate role model for their children. It is equally
important to empower youth with the skills necessary to be competitive
in the ever-changing workforce and begin to build long-term self
sufficiency. Education is the greatest weapon in the fight to end
child poverty.
Join us in providing a brighter future for our children. 100% of
the proceeds from the CRPIC’s registration fees, pledges and
sponsorships will go to the CRPIC to support our programs and services.
This 3 mile walk through Lexington, MA is followed by food, fun
and entertainment for children of all ages.
